Vladimir Karavya (Tenor) (Odessa, Ukraine 12. 01. 1886 - Cannes, France 14. 08. 1969)


He was born into a family of Greek descent.  Karavya went to St. Petersburg in the 1920’s and quickly become a famous for his interpretation of mostly dramaptic repertoire, especially for his Canio, where he demonstrated his dramatic actor talent and big power of his voice, he sang with success at the Theatre of Music Drama in Petersburg. Around 1926 Karavya immigrated to Paris, where appeared at different Russian opera houses. He was a soloist of Agrenev-Slavyansky’s Opera House (1928-1930), then he joined to the Chamber Opera of A. Dolinov (1931/1932 season). Since 1936 he taught singing at the Conservatory Russian De Paris.

Bruno Makhin (Tenor) (Vilnius, Lithuania ? - ?)

Makhin made his debut as Bayan in ‘’Ruslan and Ludmila’’ at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg (1898). From 1898 to 1900 he was a soloist of Solodovnikov’s Theater. Here he made his debut as Lensky in ‘’Eugene Onegin’’. Since 1902 Makhin appeared in Odessa, Kiev (1903, 1906, 1908), Kharkov (1910), Tiflis (1907-1908) and Vilnius (1909, 1910). His special success was at provincial operatic stages. His repertoire included Werther, Don Jose in ‘’Carmen’’, Lensky in ‘’Eugene Onegin’’, Faust, Alfredo in ‘’Traviata’’, Dubrovsky.

Giovanni Peirani (Tenor) (Rivoli/Torino 1868 - Santiago del Cile 1901)

Originally he was a sculptor. He studied singing with maestro Thermignon in Turin and with E. Barbacini in Milan. In 1895 he made his debut (without special success) at the Teatro Sociale of Colorno as Manrico in G. Verdi’s ‘’Trovatore’’. In 1898 he appeared with great success at the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli as Arrigo in ‘’I Vespri Siciliani’’ and as Radames in ‘’Aida’’. The criticism compared his voice with Francesco Tamagno’s voice. In 1899 he sang at the Teatro Storchi in Modena the part of Alvaro in ‘’La Forza del Destino’’ and also appeared in the premiere of ‘’Irnerio’’ by E. M. Poggi. One of his star roles was Otello (G. Verdi), role, which he sang with great success in Italy, Spain, Portugal and South America. In 1899 he made guest appearances at the Teatro Lirico in Rio de Janeiro in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’, ‘’Carmen’’, ‘’Il Guarany’’ and ‘’Aida’’. His young wife died in Parà of a fever epidemic. He was engaged again for appearances in South America. During a tour he fallen ill in Santiago de Chile with yellow fever and died at the of 33. He never made records.

Giovanni Goffi (Tenor) (Turin, Italy 1904 - ?)

At the age of six he appeared publicly as pianist. He studied singing in Turin and made his debut, which was very successful at  the Teatro Malibran in Venice as Rodolfo in G. Puccini’s ‘’La Bohème’’ (1924). He continued his career at the famous Italian opera stages in parts like Alfredo in ‘’La Traviata’’, Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’, Pinkerton in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’, Faust,  Almaviva in ‘’Barbiere di Siviglia’’, Elvino in V. Bellini’s ‘’La Sonnambula’’. In 1931 Giovanni Goffi appeared at the Teatro Carignano in Turin in the premiere of the opera ‘’L'Amoroso furfante’’ of  Giulio Gedda. Despite his success in 1920’s, he had a short career and probably never made records.

Eric Audouin (Tenor) (? 1882 – Paris, France 1970)

He received his education at the Conservatoire National de Paris and made his debut in 1906 at the Paris Opéra-Comique as José in ‘’Carmen’’ (See photo). During the following two years he appeared at this opera house and then made guest appearances at the famous opera theaters of the French province. In the 1911-1914 seasons he joined to the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he also sang after his participation as a soldier in the First World War, in the 1918-1921 seasons. Then he returned to France and from 1923 to 1927 seasons appeared at the Grand Opéra in Paris. His repertoire included Werther, Jean in ‘’Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame’’ by J. Massenet, Demetrius in ‘’Aphrodite’’ of Erlanger, Faust in ‘’La damnation de Faust’’ by H. Berlioz, Samson in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’ of C. Saint-Saëns, Jean in J. Massenet’s ‘’Hérodiade’’, Julien in ‘’Louise’’ of G. Charpentier, Monostatos in ‘’Zauberflöte’’ (Théâtre Gaîté-Lyrique Paris, 1912), Lohengrin (Marseille, 1925), Siegmund in 'Walküre, Tannhäuser, Walther von Stolzing in ‘’Meistersingern’’, Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’, Radames in ‘’Aida’’, Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ and Gennaro in ‘’I gioielli della Madonna’’ by E.Wolf-Ferrari. After his retirement he taught singing  in Paris. It's a little strange for me, that such a fine tenor never made recordings.

César Vercher (Tenor) (Valencia, Spain Mar. 9, 1884 - Valencia, Spain Dec. 25, 1966)

His full name is César Vercher Adán. He studied singing at the Conservatoire in Valencia and made his debut at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid in E. Arrieta's ''Marina'' (1907?). He appeared with success in Italy, Portugal and Spain. In Italy he appeared as Cesare Vercher. He made a few records for Gramophone.
